So a clean-cut college guy asks me do you have work for me to do? I need to earn $10. I'm thinking he has either set his sights low or he is not really interested in working. But I give him the benefit of the doubt and ask him what his story is? This is where it gets funny… Sort of…
He says he just came from a bank and they will open a checking account with an $10 deposit. He can have overdraft protection on it. He really needs $150 to pay his rent. He figures he will write a $150 dollar check with a planned overdraft and pay it back plus a $30 NSF fee within 30 days. I suggest to him, they call that a HOT check and you go to jail for writing hot checks.
He honestly and sincerely asks if I have a better idea. He was sleeping in a field, but it was tough keeping up with his books and things. His rent due was his part of 6 others renting a house together. I was impressed with how he was doing everything he could do to get a college education. But strongly recommended he find a different way to pay his rent…

Is this what happens when ui benefits run out and welfare denies you because you made too much during the year?
I don’t know, not that Canadians are more compassionate or anything but so far I have not seen evidence of people living in tent cities.
This does not bode well.

1> Sleeping in a field and going through college? Likely, he was interested in a securing a park rangers job after college and he wanted some genuine field work.
2> What happened to his family? Likely, his family is concerned that being born with a silver spoon in his mouth would create a weakness. This approach builds character.
3> What is happening in America? Likely, we are becoming stronger due to camping, hiking and breathing fresh air while studying in the great outdoors.
4> Is this what happens when ui benefits run out and welfare denies you because you made too much during the year? No one is denied the right to sleep in the great outdoors. America is home of brave and land of the free.
