ORGANIZED RELIGION

When does church become organized religion? I’ve been in church where the religous experience was great but the spiritual experience was in the toilet. One church i was in passed the hat on the end of a long stick. That was cool although i couldn’t figure out if they didn’t trust me or i was contagious.

It might be fun if you cared to share some of your “religious” experiences.  Here’s another memory.  I  was traveling and dropped in on a small church.  They had already started their experience.  I sat down in a chair backed up against the rear wall. A rather religious elderly type, told me I couldn’t sit there.  I said, “Thank you and left”.

I have more but will give you a chance.  What’s your experience?

It is the desire of my heart that God be Lord of my life. Life’s experiences have killed the old man and God is building a new creation in me. I look forward to experiencing the new man God creates in the old vessel known as Archie via "God Spots".

  1. Hi Archie;

    If they passed the hat in long stick, put in a toothpick. They may get the idea. 🙂

    I suppose they don’t like to see people make change. If it is a $5 sermon and I have twenty I really don’t want to give twenty.

    On the other hand if the Pastor has a Mercedes and I am driving an old half ton I figure God can look after him and I’ll keep my coin. 🙂

  2. Good morning. One story that stands out happened not to me but toa brother on our ship back in my navy days. During an overhaul period in Philadelphia, Bro Al visited a local church. After entering the building, one of the people closed and locked the door behind him. When he asked why this was done, the person told him “Oh that’s to keep the witches and warlocks out.” Bro Al; being one to never mis an opportunity, replied “but what about the ones who are already in?”

    My understanding is that Al ws the only one who found humor in that question. Al was always finding himself in strange situations. I mean suppose he visited an island that had a hundred churches on it. 99 of them preached sound doctrine and one of them handled snakes while standing on their heads. It can be assumed that his first stop would unwittingly be the one where they handles snakes. Praise God he’s solid in the faith and not easily caught off guard by error.

    I’ve seen a number of things over the years that were questionable, but nothing that stands out as being really unexpectedly “out there.”

    Blessings always in Jesus name.

  3. Thanks timbob. Sounds like you had a colorful friend in the Navy. How about this? I’ll give the short version. A friend and I were traveling on business. We were in Seattle on a Sunday night and thought we drop in on the corner church. There are not many churches to choose from in Seattle. We stayed and worshiped while the frenzy kept increasing in intensity both in sound and physical activity. I come from a Baptist background, so the singing, yelling, chicken dancing and rolling was a bit foreign. Right as things got rolling, the preacher announced “there were those that were not one of them”. They proceeded with an exorcism on me and my buddy. I bailed out and my buddy stayed for a few minutes, enjoying all the hollering that they had just driven out the devil. That was me. Oh well… At least I escaped with all my skin to worship another day. 🙂
